Qualification and Experience:
  • At least a Master’s Degree in Librarianship/Information Science;
  • Proven experience in a large academic/research Library, a considerable number of which should be in an administrative capacity;
  • Strong knowledge of library systems, electronic resources and information technologies;
  • Proven managerial competence in a University or similar environment and post-qualification training in organizational management will be an added advantage;
  • Publications in professional/academic journals will be an added advantage;
  • Excellent communication, collaboration and interpersonal skills;
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholders in a fast-paced academic environment; and
  • Active interest in professional activities e.g. memberships to professional associations.
Duties:

These shall include, but not limited to the following:

  1. Directing the operations of the University Libraries;
  2. Budgeting for the user function and information services;
  3. Marketing and promoting the library services;
  4. Keeping the library up to date with research and new technology (digital transformation & open science)
  5. Providing training and guidance in using the library;
  6. Determining the needs of the users of the library (Students, Staff, Researchers, etc);
  7. Working out annual performance contracts for the staff reporting directly to the Librarian;
  8. Making annual appropriate recommendations to the Academic and Administrative Staff Committee or Non-Academic Staff Committee on the performance of staff under the supervision of the Librarian;
  9. Collaborating with faculties to support teaching, learning and research initiatives through library instruction, information literacy programs and research consultations;
  10. Staying informed about emerging trends and best practices in academic librarianship, technology and scholarly communication; and
  11. Exercising any other such powers and duties as may be assigned to him/her by the Vice Chancellor.

Appointment Terms:

 

The successful candidate will be offered a comprehensive benefits package which will be negotiated with the University Council. The appointment will be for an initial period of three (3) years which may be renewed based on performance.
