Providence University(Taiwan) signs Memorandum of Understanding with UNESWA

The University of Eswatini has established an important partnership with the Providence University from Taiwan through the signing of a Memorandum Of Agreement (MOA) that aims to develop the biotechnology industry in the country.

The agreement was signed on the 30th of July 2019 at the Embassy of China on Taiwan in Mbabane, at a ceremony well attended by representatives from both Universities. Present during the signing ceremony was the Ambassador of China on Taiwan to Eswatini, His Excellency Jeremy Liang, UNESWA Vice Chancellor Professor Justice Thwala, President of the Province University Professor Augustine Lang and UNESWA Pro-vice chancellor Professor T. Gadaga to name a few.

The MOA will cover among other areas:

   . The Eswatini Bio-tech Development Project
   . Paclitaxel development
   . Ganoderma/Algea development
   . Agriculture, food science and medical products
   . Development of Laboratories at the Royal Science and Technology Park

This agreement came into light following the UNESWA Vice Chancellor’s visit to the Providence University in Taiwan in June 2019 with a delegation from the Royal Science and Technology Park.

Making his remarks during the signing ceremony UNESWA Vice Chancellor, Professor Justice Thwala, said during his visit to Taiwan last month he was amazed by the level of innovation in that country and as a result UNESWA could not wait to embark on a partnership of this magnitude to help improve and develop the country in efforts of assisting Eswatini attain First World Status in 2022.

“This partnership will contribute to the recently launched country Strategic Roadmap and will add to his Majesty’s Government initiative to turn around the economy of the country,” he said.

Eswatini has had fruitful relations with the Republic of China on Taiwan for 51 years. Taiwan has been working with Eswatini to develop a number of fields including Agriculture, Health, Education, Information and Technology and Infrastructure development to name a few.

Speaking during the signing ceremony, the Ambassador of China on Taiwan, his Excellency Jeremy Liang, said currently there are 375 Swazi students studying in Taiwan. With the knowledge acquired they will make huge contributions to the economy of Eswatini.

“Taiwan is now an industrialized country and with the many years of partnership with Eswatini the aim is to share knowledge and expertise so as to further develop the country. It is for the first time that a partnership of this kind is forged between UNESWA and the Providence University and we look forward to transfer of knowledge and skills in biotechnology which will further help the Agricultural sector of Eswatini in the next few years.”

Before signing the MOA both parties assured each other of their commitment to the partnership and looked forward to mutually beneficial relations between the two universities.
