Department of Animal Science hosts high-impact training program for 26 lead farmers and extension officers from the Ministry of Agriculture

In a continuous effort to boost national livestock productivity and food security, the Department of Animal Science—within the Faculty of Agriculture at the Luyengo Campus—recently concluded a high-impact training program for 26 lead farmers and extension officers from the Ministry of Agriculture. This initiative, facilitated and funded by the European Union (EU), represents a vital component of a broader commitment to climate-resilient agriculture and the empowerment of smallholder farmers.

During the intensive five-day session, participants gained practical, hands-on expertise in sustainable feeding strategies specifically designed to combat the challenges of the dry season. The curriculum focused on developing locally available feed resources and identifying their nutritive values, alongside technical training on processing and ensiling agro-industrial by-products like pineapple pulp. Additionally, the farmers mastered the formulation of concentrate feeds and urea-molasses blocks, while learning the best practices for cultivating high-value forage legumes such as Leucaena and Red Calliandra to ensure year-round livestock productivity.
